Diane Kidd Gallery “Ecosystems in Elegy”
Oct 31 – Dec 6 all-day
The Diane Kidd Gallery at Tiffin University is pleased to present Ecosystems in Elegy, an evocative exhibition by ceramic artist Carmen Ostermann, now on display through December 6, 2024. An artist reception will take place Friday, November 1 from 5-7 p.m., offering a unique opportunity to meet the artist and explore her compelling works firsthand. Light refreshments will be provided and this event is free and open to the public.
Ostermann’s sculptures examine the fragility of ecosystems and the devastating impact of environmental destruction. Her art juxtaposes the delicate beauty of nature against the irreversible harm being inflicted upon it. Through a combination of hand-built ceramic, fiber and illustration, Ostermann meticulously constructs intricate representations of birds entwined in their decaying habitats. Each piece is carved with painstaking detail—every feather, bill and talon a tribute to the beauty of the natural world, yet burdened by nodes of flora, fungi and coral, symbolizing ecological succession.
In Ecosystems in Elegy, the stark, alabaster color of her sculptures forewarns a possible future devoid of life’s vibrant chroma, asking viewers to contemplate the annihilation caused by human negligence. Through her labor-intensive process, Ostermann offers her time and artistry as an act of devotion to the environment, challenging the audience to reflect on their relationship with nature and what is ultimately worth preserving.
About the Artist: Carmen Ostermann, born in Edgewood, Kentucky, was raised across the U.S., Canada, Japan and the Philippines. She holds a BFA in ceramics and sculpture from the University of Cincinnati and an MFA from the Columbus College of Art & Design. Ostermann’s work has been featured in prestigious venues such as the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History and the Ohio Craft Museum. An educator and conservationist, she currently serves as the Administrative and Project Coordinator at Columbus Audubon, where she integrates her passion for art, education and the environment.

Pumpkin Composting with OSS
Nov 1 – Nov 30 all-day

Pumpkin Composting with OSS

Once again, the Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Solid Waste District (OSS) is  helping residents put their seasonal pumpkins to good use with its annual  Pumpkin Composting Collection. This November, residents in each county can drop off their pumpkins and gourds used for seasonal decor at conveniently  located bins at the county fairgrounds. Instead of adding these items to the  landfill, the pumpkins will be collected and transported to Garza Dirt Works in  Clyde, OH, where they’ll be composted and returned to the soil, enriching our  environment.

When pumpkins end up in landfills, they decompose slowly and keep their  valuable nutrients locked away. Composting them, on the other hand, helps  nourish the earth and benefits local farms and gardens. OSS’s pumpkin  composting initiative aims to divert waste from the landfill and create a positive  environmental impact, making it easy for residents to participate in sustainable  practices this season.

In partnering with Garza Dirt Works, OSS is making it easy for residents  to dispose of pumpkins and gourds sustainably. For those who may not be able to  use OSS’s drop-off bins, there are still plenty of ways to keep your pumpkins out  of the landfill. Consider composting them at home to enrich your own garden, or  reach out to local farms that may accept pumpkins for livestock feed or their  compost piles. Every effort, big or small, contributes to a more sustainable future!

Pumpkin drop-off bins will be open to the public throughout November  during daylight hours. The bins are for pumpkins and gourds only—no other yard  waste, please. Drop-off locations include:

∙ Ottawa County Fairgrounds – 7870 W State Route 163, Oak Harbor ∙ Sandusky County Fairgrounds – 712 North Street, Fremont ∙ Seneca County Fairgrounds – 100 Hopewell Ave, Tiffin

Let us know what you think about the pumpkin composting initiative!  We’d love to see your composting stories and pumpkin photos on Facebook  @OSSSolidWaste, Twitter (X) @Aim2BGreen, or LinkedIn at OSS Solid Waste  District. Tag us to share how you’re giving back to the earth!

Heidelberg invites community to Veterans Day Celebration

Tangeman Veterans Memorial also to be dedicated

TIFFIN – On Nov. 11, Heidelberg University will host its annual celebration of Veterans Day with its traditional ceremony on campus. This year, however, the ceremony will take on a special meaning as the University dedicates the Tangeman Veterans Memorial.

The combined ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, at the location of the new memorial, adjacent to the Campus Center. Heidelberg invites the Tiffin and surrounding community – especially veterans – to the ceremony. All veterans will receive a free lunch in Hoernemann Refectory following the event.

The United Veterans Council will present the colors, followed by the singing of the National Anthem by senior Jacob Reuter and Lift Every Voice and Sing by senior Zaria Keys. Heidelberg President Rob Huntington will present welcoming remarks, followed by remarks from ‘67 ‘Berg alumnus Fred Wookey. Wookey and classmate Sondra Libman ’67 spearheaded a project to construct the Tangeman Veterans Memorial on Heidelberg’s campus in honor of their classmate, Marine Second Lieutenant James L. Tangeman.

The keynote address will be delivered by Heidelberg alumnus R. Jaimie Orr ’81, a member of the University’s Board of Trustees. Orr spent 24 years as a U.S. Navy Judge Advocate, retiring with the rank of Commander. Closing out the ceremony will be a Volley of Three by the United Veterans Council, followed by a prayer of dedication from senior Taylor Ratliff, president of CRU on Heidelberg’s campus, and closing remarks by senior Michael Dalton, president of the Student Military Support Alliance.

Tangeman, a 1967 Heidelberg graduate, is believed to be the only Heidelberg alumnus who died in Vietnam. Tangeman was 23 when he was killed in action in the late summer of 1968. He had received his officer’s commission on the same day he graduated, June 11, 1967.

During his student days at Heidelberg, Tangeman was a standout basketball player, golfer and member of the Nu Sigma Alpha fraternity. His classmates, Wookey and Libman, wanted to do something to memorialize him, in addition to the scholarship at Heidelberg that will bear his name.

“They took it one step further,” said Ashley Helmstetter, Associate Vice President of Advancement, Alumni, and Community Relations. “They decided on the creation of a memorial on campus to honor Tangeman all Heidelberg alumni who have served. The memorial is a perfect reminder of their service and sacrifice.”

Co-sponsors of this year’s celebration are Heidelberg’s Student Senate, the Student Military Support Alliance and Parkhurst Dining.

Heidelberg Theatre to present ‘Sweet Delilah’
Nov 15 all-day

Heidelberg University Theatre invites the community to enjoy a hilarious and touching comedy about friendships that last forever. The Sweet Delilah Swim Club by Jones Hope Wooten will be performed in the Little Theatre of Founders Hall on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 15-16, at 7:30 p.m. and at Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m.

This show features five Southern women whose friendships began on their college swim team and who meet every summer for a reunion at the same beach cottage, the “Sweet Delilah,” at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The show focuses on four of those weekends and spans 33 years as the women catch up, laugh and meddle in each other’s lives.

As their lives unfold and the years pass, these women increasingly rely on one another through advice to get through the challenges that life throws at them. When fate goes wrong, these friends prove how the enduring power of “teamwork” will work in their favor.

Directed by senior Theatre major Riley Ameel and produced by Alpha Psi Omega, tickets can be reserved at www.heidelbergtheatre.org. This is an opportunity to get a good laugh and see the value of lifelong friendships in action.
