Pack a picnic and blanket and enjoy time with your family and friends in the Sacred Heart Courtyard! Jumbo yard games and $1 Jolly’s root beer floats will be available for your enjoyment. Weather permitting. Sponsored by St. Francis Spirituality Center.

Saturday, Aug. 19, 26 and Sept.16 (9:30 – 10:30am) Seeds of Joy Cooking Classes at Ralph’s Joy of Living, 33 N. Washington St., Tiffin.

Enjoy a cooking class using microgreens and vegetables from the Seeds of Hope Farm on the St. Francis Campus and olive oils from Ralph’s Joy of Living to create marinades, dressings and much more. Different ingredients will be used each time.  Cost: $20 per person.  Space is limited. Please RSVP by noon on Thursdays at 419-447-1051.

          

 

“Season of Creation” Retreat on Friday evening, Sept. 1 – Sunday afternoon, Sept. 3 at St. Francis Spirituality Center, 200 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin. 

Kickoff the Season of Creation (Sept. 1- Oct. 4) with an outdoor retreat co-sponsored by St. Francis Spirituality Center and the Franciscan Earth Literacy Center. Using prayer, contemplative movement, song, art, and green building tours, we will explore spirituality of place from dawn to dusk while celebrating God’s gift of creation and committing to action on its behalf. $190 per person includes meals and lodging; $140 Commuter. Tuesday, August 15 (8:00am-Noon) Pop-Up Summer Camp at the Franciscan Earth Literacy STEM Camp for Kids Ages 8-18 Years Old, located 194 St Francis Ave, Tiffin.


Explore the OSU’s Mobile STEM Lab (including coding, technology & robotics) with Seneca County 4-H Educator Katie Cole. 


Fee: $50 per child to be paid in advance or the morning of from 7:30 – 8:00 AM (care takers will sign two release forms).  Register at sshafranek@felctiffin.org or call (419)-448-7485

Space is limited to 20 campers (a minimum of 10 is needed per camp). A light snack will be provided, but bring your own water bottle.

 

Thursday, August 24 (6:30-8:00pm) Fall Gardening at the Franciscan Earth Literacy Center, 194 St Francis Ave, Tiffin.

There are many activities that can be accomplished in the vegetable garden in the fall in preparation for the winter season so the soil can rest and be ready for the spring planting season. There are also a number of activities that can be continued in order to keep harvesting cool weather crops through the fall.

9/11 World Memorial & Joe Torrillo to be at Seneca East Local Schools 

NATIONAL TOUR – September 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 at  

Seneca East Local Schools – 13343 US 224 Attica, OH 44807 

Seneca East Local Schools located in Attica Ohio will play host to some very special events this September.  As part of an entire week of remembrance, Seneca East will host the 9/11 World Memorial, Project 2978 which will be on display and open to the public from 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM September 7-11. A very emotional  exhibit, the non-profit 9/11 World Memorial is owned by Mitch Mendler and the memorial is meant to help pay  tribute to the 2,978 men and women who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. At the  center of the display is a steel beam, a piece of the 43rd floor of the World Trade Center South Tower.

In addition to hosting the traveling memorial, Seneca East will play host to nationally renowned speaker, Joe  Torrillo as he will speak in the main gymnasium on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at 7:15 PM. Torrillo  travels the world as a professional speaker sharing his amazing story of strength and courage as he survived  being buried alive in not only one of the twin towers, but both of them as they collapsed. Torrillo is on a quest  to make our country the “Re-United States of America”, resurrecting patriotism, trumpeting the men and  women of the Armed Services, mentoring adolescents, and inspiring audiences of all sizes to embrace  change and never give up on their dreams. Torrillo’s presentation will be open to the public. Plan to arrive  early for seating.

Finally, on Saturday, September 9, 2023, Seneca East Local Schools will play host to its annual 9/11 Tribute  Cross Country Meet, the Stars, Stripes, & Lights. The meet is set to begin at 4:30 begin and races will go off  throughout the night with the last one starting at 11:00 PM. Over 2,000 runners will be participating on the  evening. Each race is started with a firework and there will be a special ceremony of remembrance at 7:30  PM with a fireworks show following at 8:00 PM. As part of the ceremony, 2978 flags will be planted to  represent the victims of 9/11/01, skydivers will be landing during the National Anthem, and special patriotic  music will be performed live.

While developing and maintaining a composting system is important throughout the season, the fall is a great time of the year to collect some of the items that are useful for developing a great composting system. Come learn the basics of composting and how to maintain a compost pile for use in the spring on your garden.

Saturday, September 30 (9am-Noon) Oasis Day Mini Retreat “Deep River: The Spirituality of Howard Thurman” at St. Francis Spirituality Center, 200 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin. 

This Mini-Retreat will be led by Tiffin Franciscan Associate, Dan Moulton who lives on the Marblehead Peninsula with his wife, Dia. A retired engineer, Dan holds a graduate Diploma in Christian Studies from Ashland Theological Seminary and leads seminars on great figures from Christian history for Lakeside Chautauqua.

Howard Thurman is known as a great 20th century mystic, and the moral anchor of the civil rights movement in America. Thurman’s thought and writings continue to speak powerfully to the human heart and the cause of social ethics. We will discuss the life, work, and writings of this remarkable man. The morning will consist of lecture and small group discussion, interspersed with time for reading and personal reflection.
